The Benefits of Matcha: Is it really better than coffee?

13 May 2025 | The Benefits of

I’m guessing most of you are loyal to your daily coffee—but let’s be real, matcha is having its moment. You’ve probably seen it all over social media, but beyond the trendy green drink, do you actually know what matcha is and why it’s getting so much hype?

Matcha is a finely ground powder made from specially grown green tea leaves from the Camellia sinensis plant. The leaves are shaded before harvest, which gives them a naturally sweeter, richer flavor and that vibrant green color.

While matcha has recently taken over the internet, it’s been a part of traditional Japanese and Chinese culture for centuries.

Caffeine-wise, matcha packs about twice as much as regular green tea and comes close to your average cup of coffee—so you’re getting that boost, but in a smoother, more balanced way.

But why choose matcha? What benefits does it have?

  • Packed with antioxidants – Matcha is rich in catechins, powerful natural antioxidants that help protect your cells, lower the risk of chronic diseases, support healthier skin, slow hair loss, and may even improve acne.
  • Boosts brain function – Thanks to L-theanine and caffeine working together, matcha helps you stay focused and alert—without the jittery spikes and crashes you often get from coffee.
  • Supports weight loss – Like green tea, matcha can help with weight management. It’s made from the same plant and contains similar beneficial compounds often found in weight loss supplements.

Matcha definitely has its own flavour profile—think earthy, a little grassy, and just slightly sweet. It’s not as bold or bitter as coffee, and honestly, it might take a couple of tries to really appreciate it. But once you get into it, it’s super versatile. You can drink it hot or iced, turn it into a creamy latte, toss it in your smoothie, or even bake with it. I’ve even seen people mix it into pancakes and energy bites—matcha’s kind of a multitasker like that.

Honestly, it depends on what you’re after. If you’re someone who loves that strong coffee kick, matcha might feel milder at first—but the energy it gives you is smoother and more steady. No jitters, no crashing later in the day. And with all those antioxidants and skin-loving benefits? It’s kind of a win-win.

At the end of the day, I’m not saying ditch coffee forever—but if you’re curious about matcha, it’s totally worth giving it a shot. Whether you’re in it for the health perks or just want to switch things up, it might surprise you. Who knows—you might end up loving the calm, focused energy it brings to your day! 🌱🍵
